Susceptibility of system users BS 8580 & LCA Service standards

Description

BS 8580 Water quality – Risk assessments for Legionella control – Code of practice, requires that Legionella risk assessors include an evaluation of susceptibility of persons likely to be present. The Legionella Control Association service standard utilizes large parts of BS 8580 to form it’s LRA service standard. In practice many argue that assessors’, who are unlikely to have medical records for individuals are not in a strong position to achieve such an assessment.

Key steps for compliance using L8MS Risk

  • Ensure that the site description in the executive summary section covers: –
  • A general description of the purpose of the building
  • Indicates those likely to be exposed to the water system being assessed (staff, contractors, pupils, patients, public etc).
  • Provides semi-quantitative assessment of susceptibility, for example typical population (potentially including some individuals at high risk), or higher risk population (containing a high proportion individuals at high risk) healthcare/care homes.

Suggested action

Develop company standard phrases for the typical properties, water systems, and scenarios assessed. Add these phrases to standard paragraphs for use by all assessors. (As below).
